David Sosa, an NYC-based singer-songwriter whose album, Journey To Love, debuted on Itunes top 100 R&B albums, at #3. David’s newest releases are the steamy Ocean Fire featuring Loubang and Lyteral and sultry R&B bop, Toxic.
1 In Music: What is unique about you and your music?
David Sosa [DS]: My music is highly relatable. No matter where you are at in your life, you will know I lived the experience of my songs, and people feel that. I am proud of that fact, I believe this is what makes music timeless: the feelings it stirs up in the listeners.
1 In Music: What or who shaped your music and who supports you?
DS: My Parents and many teachers throughout my life have supported and encouraged my gift. I would not be who I am today if it wasn’t for life’s many teachers. As far as who shaped my music, taking vocal lessons and competing for state and county helped me delve into Opera, Classical Jazz and Broadway tunes. I learned early on the beauty and importance of being eclectic.
1 In Music: When did you realise you were going to make music professionally?
DS: I grew up listening and reading lyrics written by Mariah Carey, Teena Marie and hearing greats like Luther and Patti, Phoebe Snow and Donny Hathaway. Later, I delved into Rachelle Ferrell and other great artists, all who played a huge part in my love of song and music. I realized at a very young age I wanted to be like these people in some way and do my part.
1 In Music: What type of music do you listen to?
DS: Classic soul & R&B, Jazz, Opera, and contemporary R&B.
1 In Music: Who, to you, is the most undervalued music artist?
DS: Ramona Montanez, Nao, Durand Bernar and countless other artists out here who in their own way are making waves but folks don’t get to hear too often.
1 In Music: How do you prepare for your performances?
DS: I breathe inwardly and deep, and affirm that I am music and music is my ministry. I try to have fun with all I do or else what is the point? I try to be as comfortable on stage as I am in my living room at home. That is always the goal.
1 In Music: What do you do when you don’t do music (creative or otherwise) and that you are passionate about?
DS: I love to cook and occasionally host when space and time permits. I love a chill laid back vibe of drinks and loved ones, so I make time to have those. I love to travel as well, and pandemic be damned, I look forward to doing so.
1 In Music: Success to you is…?
DS: Success to me is anytime I see a project through and I make music that I am proud of. That is success, Getting paid to do what I love to do is always a plus.
1 In Music: What do you wish you were told when you started out and that you think would help anyone who starts out?
DS: BE YOURSELF!
Be authentic and organic, and do not let others impose on you their ideas of who you need to be and how you should go about doing what it is you do.
1 In Music: Talk to us a little about your latest project…
DS: I recently released my latest single, Toxic produced by Diggy Diamond. It is a very personal song about someone you connect with intimately and physically that you know is not good for you emotionally or otherwise. I think we have all been there, and it’s one of my favorite songs I have written and recorded.
1 In Music: Any upcoming projects?
DS: Currently, been recording and writing.
So there are some creative things going on.
Just releasing some singles in the meantime to let people see where the sound is and may be going.
