Tommy Shafer is a young multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter from Waldwick, New Jersey. He is inspired by music ranging surprisingly from the Beatles to Justin Bieber. Actively writing and performing his songs and covering popular tracks, the teenager truly means to work hard to climb the musical ladder. Furthermore, it is with enthusiasm and positivity, not arrogance or a sense of entitlement, that he aims to get through to a dream that have shied others away from trying. 1inmusic met with the 16-year old musician as he embarked on the perilous yet exciting journey.
1inmusic: Hi Tommy and thanks for talking to us. Would you introduce yourself and your music to people who anyone discovering you please?
Tommy Shafer (TS): I’m a hard-working artist at the age of 16 and I discovered what I wanted to be in life as young as 11 years old and have never doubted what I wanted to pursue in life. Music is my passion and all I do every day is music. My sound is Acoustic Pop/Rock similar to the sound of Shawn Mendes meets Ed Sheeran.
1inMusic: What shaped your music and who supports you?
TS: I have always pushed myself to get better in music and to pursue a career in music. When I started playing guitar, that really shaped my music and my song writing and I developed a real passion for my music. The person that supports me the most is definitely my father. He brings me to every gig or any musical event that I have to go to, no matter how far it is or what time of day it takes place. He inspires me so much. He is also a musician.
1inmusic: When did you realise you were going to make music professionally?
TS: I realized I wanted to pursue a career in music when I watched Justin Bieber’s 2011 Documentary- “Never Say Never.” I started to sing all different songs around the house ranging from The Beatles to Justin Bieber. About a year later in March of 2012, I started to get serious and I worked on perfecting my musical craft.
1inmusic: What type of music do you listen to?
TS: I listen to all different types of music ranging from Classic Rock, Hip-Hop, Singer/Songwriter, and my favorite Pop.
1inmusic: Who, to you, is the most undervalued music artist?
TS: The most undervalued music artist in my opinion is probably Ke$ha, I heard she writes all of her music but people underestimate her talent and her song writing, but she is a very creative and hard-working artist.
1inmusic: How do you prepare for your performances?
TS: For each show, whether I am opening up for my dad’s band or playing at my local mall, I always practice a week before the show and get my set right for the crowd and I always promote the show on my social media sites.
1inmusic: How do you write and what are your songs all about?
TS: I believe that the easiest topic to write about is love, and that ignites my songwriting flow, whether it is a break up or a crush. I do write about events that go on in my daily life and different events that have happened to me in the past. It is so important in being a musician to write everyday and to perfect your musical craft.
1inmusic: What do you do when you don’t do music?
TS: I love to hangout with my family and watch different comedy movies/TV shows.
1inmusic: Success to you is…
TS: … Being happy about where you are at in your life, following your dreams, having your hard work pay off, and being comfortable financially of course.
1inmusic: What do you wish you have been told when you started out and that you think would help anyone who starts out?
TS: I wish someone told me to get my social media channels strong and to advertise myself on the internet. I believe that it’s very important to have a good social media game going and just to put yourself out there. When I was first uploading my covers of various pop hits back in 2012/2013, I focused on quantity over quality which didn’t help too much because having quality music/videos is much more important than having a ton of videos that aren’t particularly of the best quality.
1inmusic: Any upcoming projects?
TS: I’m just working very hard on getting my social media numbers up and putting my music out there. Also, I am working on creating an online merch store for my fans to receive my T-Shirts, Wristbands, CDs, and Posters.
1inmusic: Thank you for giving us some of your time and good luck with your musical journey. Will you leave us with some links where to find your music?
TS: You can check out all of my covers/original music on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/user/shafer39. I have about 200 videos uploaded on there but the most popular cover on my video channel is my cover of Love Yourself by Justin Bieber. You can find links to my social media, original music, and my biography on my Official Website.
