There is very little in the biography of Rap artist Roland apart from the fact that he is born in the city of Pittsburgh and raised in small town Clarion. The rest as it says is in the music and this is convenient for us as he has just released a new single “Watchu Wait’n For” which is positively streaming on Soundcloud with over 300 likes. We met him for a little chat.
1inmusic: Hey Roland, congratulations on your release and how well it is doing on Soundcloud. Tell us more about what you are trying to achieve with your music?
Roland: I want people to see my mind. It would be great if a million other souls tuned into my music, and greater if any number of them understood my heart from it.
1inmusic: With your release, it is evident that you are really going for it. What has been your plan to make it all happen and what have you done so far towards that plan?
Roland: I guess I don’t really have a plan. I’m just finding my way as I go. Everyday I wake up is another opportunity to do what I love, whether it’s the beat pad/keyboard combo, listening, mixing and mastering, or writing.
1inmusic: At what point did you realise you were going to make music a profession?
Roland: Only about a year or two ago. I’ve been making music for 5 but only recently decided to share it on Soundcloud. People started vibe with it almost as much as I did, so I got addicted.
1 in Music: What music idols shaped your music and who has believed in you to help get you where you are at?
Roland: I listened to pretty much all of Hip-hop so it’s hard to say I idolized any specifically. But all my friends in my life so far that I would consider brothers have been telling me I could do this even before I thought I could.
1inmusic: Talk to us a little bit more about your new release. Who has been involved, how was it made, where was it recorded?
Roland: The beat was made by Shane Taylor. My boy Doco of Legendary Music out in Minneapolis hooked me up with beat. It was written, recorded, mixed and mastered in the same room I sleep in. I make all my music in my college appartment.
1inmusic: I am guessing your success on Soundcloud is only a beginning. What are you planning to do next? Any live dates, promotional tours?
Roland: I’ve been talking to a few different sources in Los Angeles, nothing too major so far but definitely some possible avenues to expanding my audience.
1inmusic: On that note, I would love to know how you prepare for your performances?
Roland: I haven’t had the chance to perform yet, but I can’t even imagine how exciting it would be.
1inmusic: What about songwriting, do you do any and what prompts it?
Roland: I write everything I record, pretty much any given time of day so, I guess what prompts it is a good instrumental.
1inmusic: I am curious to know, who, to you, is the most undervalued music artist?
Roland: J Cole is undervalued for sure. Common‘s been undervalued. Most lyrical Hip-hop artists are undervalued.
1inmusic: I am sure your fans would love to know what you do when you don’t do music (creative or otherwise) and that you are passionate about.
Roland: I’ve played basketball ever since I was young. 1 and a half years of college ball too. Nowadays I answer interviews, work on establishing the business aspect of my music, chill with friends and go to class every once in a while.
1inmusic: Success to you is…
Roland: … having a positive effect on someone’s life. I’ve been listening to Hip-hop my whole life and it’s not just because it’s got great rhythm. Good Hip-hop is love. Good Hip-hop clears the mind. Good Hip-hop gets you away from whatever you don’t need to be worrying about.
1inmusic: That is definitely a quote! What do you wish you have been told when you started out and that you think would help anyone who starts out?
Roland: “Save all of your money” would have been nice. It certainly takes a lot of it to get places in the world.
1inmusic: Roland, that is a great one to finish on. Thank you for joining us. Can you tell us where we can find you music please?
Roland: You can find me on Soundcloud and soon on my own website (linked from my soundcloud).
