Michael Zuzek: Chanelling the Classics in Modern Pop-Rock

by | Jul 2, 2024

Meet Michael Zuzek

The upcoming roar of a newfound pop-rock powerhouse has been carefully crafted by Michael Zuzek, who not only knows how to play the keys of the piano but of your heart. Influenced by the playing style of Burton Cummings who carefully fronted an iconic sound for The Guess Who and the syncopated melodies of ragtime piano that elevated 50’s and 60’s music. Aspiring to the iconic band The Beatles, who have contributed to not only the sound of songs but vocal intensity found in Zuzek’s talent. With combined inspiration from The Zombies’ alluring melodies and The Band’s very own, Garth Hudson, who specialized in abstracting sound from the organ, Zuzek has successfully reimagined the sound of the 60s and 70s.

Born in the heart of Toronto, Zuzek spent most of his childhood surrounded by his family and creating friendships that would last a lifetime. But most of his time was consumed by the growing relationship he was developing with music. Michael discovered his calling for the piano at the young age of 5, where he began lessons and furthered his development with the keyboard family. The piano was only an introduction to what his musical career would hold, as he wrote and produced the musical soundtrack for the film Ulysses, where he transformed the cinematic intensity into sound. 1 In Music meets the artist.

The sound of Michael Zuzek

Michael ZuzekWhat is unique about you and your music?

Michael Zuzek [MZ]: I feel that I am a person who can do many things successfully. All my life I have prepared effectively for whatever I am planning and usually get the result I am hoping for.

My music is unique in a similar way. Many of my songs sound different and have different textures as well as tones. I hope they are all received well upon their respective releases.

What or who shaped your music and who supports you?

MZ: The Beatles and classic rock in the 60s/70s have shaped my music the most.

I aspire to reimagine some of these iconic sounds and thoughts that musicians of the day were having while writing and producing their iconic songs/albums.

My family and friends are the most important support I have and I am grateful everyday for them. They always embrace and support whatever ideas I come up with and that means so much.

When did you realize you were going to make music professionally?

I realized this about a year ago as I was coming close to finishing my debut album. It also helped that I was finally playing music professionally to boost my confidence on the idea of it.

What inspires Michael Zuzek

What type of music do you listen to?

Michael Zuzek [MZ]: I listen to any good music. That is how I have always described it. Mainly rock from the 60s-70s and any other bands I love.

Who, to you, is the most undervalued music artist?

MZ: The Guess Who in my opinion are the most undervalued artist ever. They were essentially The Beatles of Canadian rock due to their similar time period and uncanny ability to write and create hits within short periods of time. Burton Cummings has to be one of the greatest singers ever and is often forgotten about.

How do you prepare for your performances?

Michael Zuzek [MZ]: I drink lots of tea/water on the day in preparation to sing. I also need lots of sleep the night before to keep a level head. Once I am up there playing, everything is easy.

What do you do when you don’t do music (creative or otherwise) and that you are passionate about?

MZ: I have been a farmer on my family farm for over a decade now. Alongside that I love to play football/basketball and watch more or less any sport. Most of my time is spent with my family, friends, or girlfriend.

Success to you is…?

Success is happiness.

MZ: Money should not matter in life if you have enough to be comfortable in your day to day life. I just want to be happy and have those around me happy.

What do you wish you were told when you started out and that you think would help anyone who starts out?

MZ: To be confident in yourself. Every aspect of your life demands you to be confident in yourself and what you are doing.

I truly think that if you are confident and believe in yourself, things will work out.

What’s next?

Any upcoming projects?

I am currently preparing to release my debut album “Everest” on August 2nd, 2024! It has been a long road to this milestone and I am growing in excitement for that day.

And we can’t wait for it. Wishing you the best with its release. Where will we be able to find it and the rest of your music?
