Peter Gall releases Drum Seeds – Album Review

Following his acclaimed release Love Avatar—which earned him the 2025 German Jazz Award for Album of the Year— Berlin-based percussionist, composer, and producer Peter Gall returns with Drum Seeds. Released via Compost Records, the project represents a deliberate departure from collective jazz ensemble playing towards an introspective studio creation.

Background and Genesis

The initial concept for Drum Seeds stemmed from a suggestion by Compost Records head Michael Reinboth, who envisioned a drum-centric record starring Gall. The initial sessions began at Jan Krause’s (Beanfield) studio, where Gall had previously tracked material with spiritual jazz outfit WEB WEB. Over a two-year production cycle in his private facility, Gall expanded upon these foundational tracking sessions, performing and recording every instrument himself.

While the preliminary goal focused purely on percussion and polyrhythmic framework, Gall’s affinity for vintage hardware synths reshaped the project into a hybrid electronic-acoustic endeavor. The tracks balance mantric drum patterns with analogue synth layers, resulting in a cohesive work designed strictly as a studio album rather than a live-to-tape performance.

Architectural Soundscape and Track Highlights

The sonic scope of Drum Seeds incorporates influences ranging from Krautrock and breakbeat to ambient electronica and film scores. Rather than leaning on technical virtuosity, the compositions prioritise groove progression, textural contrast, and atmospheric depth.

• Groove Receiver establishes the record’s aesthetic with dual stereo drum kits underpinning Mellotron flute lines, driving a heavy Krautrock cadence. It does seem to take its time establishing the underpinning drum cadence, only introducing the flute and the electronic tones quite some seconds later.
• Super Truth is a high-tempo piece characterised by turbulent synth sequences and driving rhythmic energy.
• Prophet Juno combines polyrhythmic Afrobeat-inspired percussion with an arpeggiated Juno-60 line, building toward an aggressive analogue synthesizer lead.
• It Is Happening Again draws on an Elvin Jones-inspired triplet pulse, pairing cinematic pads with a jazz-inflected rhythmic foundation.
• Core is anchored by a syncopated, J Dilla-influenced R&B beat set against melancholic harmonic progressions.
• Hello Future Us features high-bpm jungle drum patterns juxtaposed with raw Korg MS-20 bass synthesis.
• Zombie Satellite highlights the heavy, saturated tones of Sequential Circuits Prophet synthesis alongside drum arrangements inspired by Tony Williams and Jack DeJohnette.
• Love Lost Bits serves as the album’s understated, trip-hop-influenced closer, bringing the LP to a contemplative resolution.

The album also features the tracks You And Me (that kept making me feel like I (me) was rather running away from you lol), Seeds, Glow, Disco Orbit and 5 bonus tracks Interstellar Love Letter, Mantra Street, Flashing Flowers, Drum Radio, Eat The Sun, making the total tracks 17 that seem to plant drum seeds and mimic the sonic cadence of its blooming with its hesitations and tiptoeing, its acceleration and other cadence, and the atmospheric electronica that surrounds the central musical heartbeat.

Production and Visual Design

The album was mixed by Jan Krause, mastered by Lopazz at Mixmastering, and executive produced by Michael Reinboth. Continuing the visual direction of Love Avatar, the sleeve artwork features a painting by Munich artist Ena Oppenheimer, whose work has been exhibited at the Pinakothek der Moderne and Haus der Kunst.
