Introduction and Matt Cardle at Rewind Festival
Hmmm… Where have I been a certain weekend in August, you asked. Well mainly chilling out with the likes of 2010 X-factor winner Matt Cardle as he sat with Canalside Radio colleague Matt Isaacs and myself for an inteview. The singer-songwriter talks to us about the privilege of fronting the Trevor Horn Band at Rewind North Festival, the 80s festival. He looks and sounded absolutely as excited as one could be at the opportunity to be performing music he had grown up with with such a legendary band. He also reveals some of the track names for his upcoming new album for which he is crafting a new sound he has been wrking on for the past 3-4 years. The full interview is being aired on Canalside Radio 102.8FM this Christmas!
Clive Jackson and Atmosphere at Rewind Festival
We also sat down with Clive Jackson, founder of Dr & The Medics. The Indie Band was doing very well on the Indie Scene ith a number one hit on the Indie Chart an were quite content with the status and history that gave them. Then they covered “Spirit in the sky” which propelled them beyond the Indie Scene into the mainstream. They have been doing the song for 2-3 years now and are now celebrating 35 years of exitence!
Outside the press tent, the grounds are full of 80s nostalgia. People are dressed in the fashion of the decade, mainly the colourful miixes od Cindy Lauper and Madonna’s styles or in the attire of movie characters of the period: I met a few Top Gunners in uniform and definitely one or two “Who’s that girl” main characters’ impersonators. There is also the aerobics attire which I always associate with Jamie Lee Curtis in “Perfect”, the movie.
The weather threatens to take away the sun with a couple of little grey clouds in the horizon, as well as a few spits here and there to ruin a sunny, fun day but the crowds is oblivious beyond simply taking out their umbrellas, as they continue to watch, dance, cheer and sing along.
Lily Gonzales at Rewind Festival
We then meet Lily Gonzales. The positive energy from this amazing musician is absolutely contagious. She is the percussionist and vocalist or the Rewind All Star Band. This means that she has to learn, rehearse and perform a long llist of songs. She has most recently played for such musicians as Faithless, Tony Hadley, Brand New Heavies and Art Of Noise. Lily has also performed and recorded with Nik Kershaw, Duran Duran, Boy George, Bono, KT Tunstall, Dave Stewart, Holly Johnson, Roland Gift, Belinda Carlisle, Go West, Sister Sledge, Candi Staton, Lucie Silvas, ABC, Pete Cox, Wang Chung, Johnny Hates Jazz, Cutting Crew, Kid Creole & The Coconuts, Midge Ure, Howard Jones, Paul Young, Westlife, The Christians, China Crisis, Carol Decker, Heather Small, Marc Almond, The Weather Girls, Jimmy Somerville, Rick Astley, Kim Wilde, Odyssey, 5ive Star, Steve Augeri (Journey) and John Parr.
As if that was not enough work, she is promoting her debut album, doing signings during the festival. We are excited to hear her pour her sound out on “Opening old wounds”, the album title. I have the privilege of getting a copy for review on 1inmusic, airplay on Canalside Radio and pure enjoyment at home.
