The inspirations that birthed the sound of Vandes Jackson
1 In Music: When did you realise you were going to make music professionally?
VJ: Beginning in a small home studio attic in the city, my roots in music were humble. Equipped with a drum set, a plethora of musical equipment, and boundless creativity, I began honing my skills. As I delved into a variety of genres and drew influence from various sources, my passion for music intensified, driving me to pursue it full-time as a record producer, songwriter, musician, and artist after my military enlistment. Though the exact moment of my decision to pursue a professional career in music may be unclear, my lifelong love and dedication for the craft are unmistakable.
1 In Music: What type of music do you listen to?
VJ: Attending a performing arts high school provided me with a unique opportunity to immerse myself in various artistic disciplines, including studying the art of Jazz. During this time, I was exposed to a diverse range of musical styles and influences that shaped my musical journey.
One significant influence came from my grandfather, who would play Gene Ammons’ “Canadian Sunset” and the music of my great boogie-woogie pianist father, Albert Ammons, daily during my adolescence. These experiences rooted me in the rich jazz tradition and allowed me to appreciate the intricacies and beauty of this genre.
Additionally, my upbringing exposed me to other genres as well. Coming from a gospel background, thanks to my grandfather being a pastor, I was deeply rooted in the spiritual and soulful sounds of gospel music. This connection to gospel music instilled in me a deep appreciation for the power and emotion conveyed through this genre.
Furthermore, my mother’s influence as an avid hip hop historian and super fan introduced me to the vibrant world of urban and soul music. Listening to these genres opened my ears to the rhythmic and lyrical artistry found within them. It allowed me to explore the nuances and creativity that each genre offers.
As a result of these diverse influences, I have developed a broad appreciation for music across genres, finding beauty in each. I believe that every genre has something unique and valuable to offer, whether it’s the improvised solos in jazz, the passionate melodies in gospel, or the rhythmic poetry in hip hop. This open-mindedness allows me to draw inspiration from a wide range of styles and create music that reflects the amalgamation of my musical influences.
Ultimately, my ability to listen to and appreciate all genres has enriched my musical journey and fueled my desire to explore and push boundaries as an artist.
1 In Music: Who, to you, is the most undervalued music artist?
VJ: My perception honestly changes with the season. It’s important to note that the perception of an artist being undervalued can be subjective. I have always been fascinated by how different artists approach music, and one issue that I have noticed is that some artists, like Charlie Puth and Dominic Fike, are often undervalued despite the fun and unique music they create. While not necessarily my style, I appreciate the creativity and originality they bring to the table. It’s always refreshing to see artists who are unafraid to take risks and explore uncharted musical territory.

1 In Music: How do you prepare for your performances?:
In the past eight months, I have incorporated the practice of daily meditation into my routine, which has become a valuable habit for me. Prior to important events such as meetings, shows, or conferences, I make it a point to pause and reconnect with the divine creator and the universe. This allows me to enter these moments with a sense of purpose and to be fully present for the people I am engaging with. I aspire to fulfill their needs, be it providing guidance like a prescription, offering a source of inspiration, or showcasing my unforgettable talents to make a lasting impact.
1 In Music: What do you do when you don’t do music (creative or otherwise) and that you are passionate about?
VJ: One of my greatest passions is traveling and exploring new places, and along with this, I also enjoy reading a lot. Over time, I have amassed an extensive collection of incredible books that I am very proud of. I value education highly, and as a result, have been pursuing a graduate degree. With graduation just a few months away, I am patiently awaiting the opportunity to celebrate this milestone achievement.
1 In Music: Success to you is…?
VJ: Success in music can be interpreted in different ways, as it means something different to each individual. However, from my perspective, success in music goes beyond fame and fortune. It encompasses the ability to connect with and inspire others through your art, the fulfillment of expressing yourself authentically, and the continuous growth and improvement in your craft.
To me, success in music means being able to create music that resonates with people on a deep emotional level, evokes positive emotions, and leaves a lasting impact. One day we will all die. The music will remain forever and that’s something beautiful to behold! Success is a metric. Music is power!
1 In Music: What do you wish you were told when you started out and that you think would help anyone who starts out?
VJ: I wish someone told me what I was up against. Other artists aren’t enemies. The machine is. Initially, Diana Schweinbeck provided valuable guidance on industry trends and how to effectively navigate the music industry as an independent artist. I deeply appreciated this direction, but my desire to learn the most effective fundraising methods remained strong. I understood that this required connecting with the right individuals and seeking out opportunities to leverage my talent more effectively.
From my experience, I would offer this advice to aspiring independent artists: Nothing comes for free, and unless you can find a balance between your passion for music and the business side of things, your journey may not unfold as you anticipate. It is crucial to recognize that pursuing a career as an independent artist involves both artistic fulfillment and entrepreneurial skills to succeed in the highly competitive music industry.
