1 In Music is meeting Carrie Lane, formerly a solo artist that toured the country and had great success as a YouTube sensation. Carrie is the creative mind behind band Honey Thief, a reflection of her love for country music. She co-wrote the upcoming sophomore EP with James Strazza. The album is scheduled to debut in February of 2016, followed by a national tour.
1inmusic: What is unique about you and your music?
Carrie Lane: Honey Thief is such a unique and specific blend of different stories, talents, and genres that it’s hard to compare the music to any one else’s. That is something that is hard to find in today’s industry. No one wants to hear just another Coldplay because Coldplay already exists.
1inMusic: What shaped your music and who supports you?
CL: …My music has been shaped by listening to the music my parents liked growing up and then becoming extremely interested in finding my own music as I grew up. My number one supporters are my parents. They have helped me through every step of the way when it comes to my music. They have shown me how to be fearless and how to take failure as a lesson in learning.
1inmusic: When did you realise you were going to make music professionally?
CL: When I was 18 I was in college and not really sure what I was doing with my life. Writing songs was the only thing that made me feel happy and good about myself again. That’s when I knew I had to be a musician.
1inmusic: What type of music do you listen to?
CL: I literally listen to everything! People always joke that they do, but my ipod is seriously confused. I love country, rap, musicals, folk, r&b, rock, pop, hip-hop… the list goes on and on.
1inmusic: Who, to you, is the most undervalued music artist?
CL: Right now? I think people are seriously sleeping on Tory Kelly. I think people don’t want to give a pretty, young blonde girl a chance because they automatically assume she’s redundant. I think being an all-american looking girl who is trying to do something different with music actually hurts you in the long run.
1inmusic: How do you prepare for your performances?
CL: I always do warm ups in the morning and then try to rest my voice for the rest of the day until I do warm ups again right before performance. I always have to work out as well, gets the endorphins going and reminds your body of the importance of stamina.
1inmusic: What ignites your (song) writing flow?
CL: It really depends on the day. That’s what’s so fun to me about writing music, every time is different. I could be inspired by an event that happened that day or just a story or lyric that’s been going through my mind.
1inmusic: What do you do when you don’t do music and that you are passionate about?
CL: I love to work out and dance, can’t get through the day without it. Mostly I’m a people person, if I’m doing anything when there are people around I can have fun. Going out, staying in, whatever. People are just so fascinating to me and I love to study and learn more about what makes someone tick.

CL: …Happiness.
1inmusic: What do you wish you have been told when you started out and that you think would help anyone who starts out?
CL: Have patience. Good things take time. It’s way more rewarding to get something you’ve been busting tail for then to just have something handed to you. I was raised very fortunate and that was a lesson that music had to teach me.
1inmusic: Any upcoming projects?
CL: …Yes! My latest EP ‘Bad idea’ just came out on February 11th and we will be on tour for most of March and April and then again once the summer starts up.
